Being a firefighter demands hard work and continuous, rigorous training to maintain the strength and skill levels needed. It requires dedication, compassion and the ability to handle emergency situations that can often mean life or death. At times, the intensity is like no other, but the rewards make it all worthwhile.

What are the job duties of a firefighter?

  • Responds to fire alarms and performs firefighting duties such as laying and connecting hose, holding nozzles, directing water streams, ventilating buildings and raising and climbing ladders.
  • Performs Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation and first aid to include: assessing, treating and transporting patients; determines and initiates proper emergency procedures for life threatening injuries and illnesses.
  • Rescues individuals by removing persons from dangerous environments or protecting them from dangerous conditions.
  • Performs general maintenance and repair duties to include: cleaning and maintaining the facility and the grounds and testing and performing maintenance and minor repairs on firefighting apparatus and equipment.
  • Responds to other emergency calls such as hazardous material, auto extrication, water rescue, confined space entry and high angle rescues.
  • Participates in training classes in order to enhance firefighting, first aid and emergency response techniques.
  • Performs salvage operations such as sweeping and pumping water, removing debris and performing general clean up.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

Minimum qualifications for a Lake Havasu City Firefighter include:

  • Must be 18 or older.
  • Must possess a High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D.).
  • Must Possess NFPA 1001 Firefighter I & II issued by the Arizona State Fire Marshal or other state or federal NFPA equivalent.
  • Must be an Arizona State certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or National Registry.
  • Must possess a valid Arizona Driver's License.

Testing process:

  • Written Exam: The written exam evaluates your reading comprehension, mechanical and spatial aptitude, mathematics as well as your ability to comprehend and learn from written instructions.
  • Physical Abilities Test: This tests your physical strength and stamina, which is required to be a firefighter.
  • Oral Board Interview: The oral board measures interpersonal relations, ability to communicate orally, judgment, reasoning, and analytical skills.

Successful candidates (post-offer) must:

  • Meet employment eligibility requirements as established by the Immigration Reform and Control Act.
  • Successfully pass a post-offer medical exam.
  • Pass a fingerprint and background investigation.

Testing for firefighter is done annually for the purpose of establishing an eligibility list. Applications are accepted only when a testing session is scheduled.
