Lake Havasu City Police Department detectives, assisted by U.S.
D.E.A. agents, arrested two suspects and seized over 2 pounds of “high grade”
marijuana. On Tuesday, September 18, at
approximately 7:30 p.m., officers stopped a 2007 Ford Escape for speeding on
State Route 95 near milepost 185. During
the traffic stop, officers detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from the
vehicle. The subsequent search revealed two
grocery bags containing approximately one pound of marijuana each. The marijuana was identified as ‘BC Buds’, a
high grade form of marijuana grown in British Columbia. This marijuana is extremely potent and a
quarter-ounce sells on the street for about $240.
Detectives arrested the driver, James Donald Gilliland, age 27, and charged
him with transporting marijuana, a class-3 felony, possession of marijuana for sale,
a class-4 felony, conspiracy to transport marijuana, a class-4 felony and possession
of drug paraphernalia, a class-6 felony. Jesse Smith, age 27, a passenger in the
vehicle, was arrested and charged with conspiracy to transport marijuana, a
class-4 felony. Gilliland and Smith were
remanded to the custody of the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office following their
initial appearance and are held on $100,000 bond. Detectives executed a search warrant at
Gilliland’s residence on Bimini Lane where they
discovered numerous items of stolen property, including televisions and a
weapon. Approximately one-quarter pound of marijuana was also seized. Additional criminal charges will be filed once
the stolen property is processed. Total
street value of the 36 ounces seized is estimated at $34,560.
