SARA Park Rescue Heat Related
A 19-year old female was overcome by 100+ degree temperatures
while walking the trails west of SARA Park Tuesday afternoon. The Lake Havasu City Fire Department’s
Technical Rescue Team (TRT) responded to a call from the woman’s hiking partner
after she realized she couldn’t walk any further. The TRT found her below the area known to
hikers as “The Crack,” and determined they would not be able to transport her
out on the quads due to the terrain. The
DPS helicopter “Ranger” was summoned from Kingman to assist. Paramedics treated the woman at the scene for
heat exhaustion until Ranger arrived and they were able to get her to safety
after a short helicopter ride. Once out
of danger, the woman was released to her friend after refusing further medical
assistance. “This incident underscores
the need for extra caution when venturing out into the heat,” said Lake Havasu
City Fire Chief, Dennis Mueller. “This
young woman was smart to call for help when she realized she needed it, and it
was lucky that her partner’s cell phone was able to connect from that area. We are pleased to hear that she will be
fine.” Chief Mueller recommended hikers
remember these basic things before walking out into the desert heat: “Drink lots of water before you go and take
lots of water with you, take a cell phone and never travel alone.”
