Changes in Store for SARA Park Fireworks Spectators

Spectators traveling to SARA Park to enjoy this weekend’s Winter Blast fireworks displays by the Western Pyrotechnics Association are being advised to arrive early and leave the alcohol and the RV at home.  City officials are implementing a number of special rules for the President’s Day weekend event that has grown in popularity over the years.  “This is a huge event, both for our community and the pyrotechnics association,” said parks and recreation department director, Bill Mulcahy.  “It draws spectators from all over the southwest and the growing crowds have prompted us to implement a few safety changes regarding traffic, parking and camping this year.”

Parking –

·       Vehicle stopping or parking on the shoulder of SR95 is strictly prohibited and subject to increased law enforcement activity.

·       RVs are not allowed in the parking lot during the shows and there is no overnight parking or camping anywhere in SARA Park except for previously authorized show participants.

·       On-site parking subject to $5 fee collected by Lions Club and the BMX Association.

·       SARA Park is an alcohol-free zone this weekend.  No alcoholic beverages will be sold or permitted on the grounds.

·       Pop-up tents, shades and grills will not be permitted in the parking lot, but may be used on the ball fields.

·       Additional parking/viewing is available in the BMX/Kart Club area.

Traffic –

·       During the shows, the westerly SARA Park access road within the fallout zone will be closed to traffic and parking.  After the shows, all departing traffic will be routed out of SARA Park via the westerly access road to the signalized intersection at SR95 and McCulloch Blvd. South.

City officials are advising citizens with noise-sensitive pets to take precautions to protect their animals from the noise, which may last until 10 p.m. Thursday and Sunday, and 10:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday.  Public safety officials also remind everyone that fireworks are illegal in Arizona and recommend the public leave the fireworks show to the professionals.
