Lake Havasu City Police believe a job advertisement appearing
in the classified section of the Today’s
News Herald newspaper is fraudulent and an attempt to gather personal
information from persons who call to inquire about the job. The ad has appeared in the Herald daily since October 29.
Detectives received a Silent Witness tip and the subsequent
investigation revealed the phone number is a pre-paid cell phone originating in
Alberta, Canada. The phone number also
appears in at least 13 other newspapers advertising for employment
opportunities ranging from clerical and office positions to customer service
managers and marketing.
When prospective applicants call the phone number they are
asked for their name and address. The person answering will not reveal their
name or the name of the company. The
subject is described as having a ‘heavy foreign accent’ and tells each caller that
they will receive a form which will have to be completed.
The Police Department encourages all citizens to verify the
legitimacy of any company that asks for personal information.
