Police Applicant Information

Application Process

  • Request an application from Human Resources/Risk Management at (928) 453-4143 or download from the City's web site.
  • Submit application to Human Resources/Risk Management for testing eligibility review.
  • All applicants will be contacted by mail or telephone regarding their eligibility to test and future testing dates times, and locations.

Testing Process (2 day process)

Written Examination (waived for in-state laterals)

Consists of an essay to be written on a subject announced at the test, as well as 100 multiple-choice questions. Study guide will be distributed just prior to the exam with allotted study time.

Physical Aptitude Test

Scores are based on the completion time of each event. Minimum passing score is 384 points. Events include:

  • 99 yard obstacle course
  • Body drag
  • Wall climb (solid)
  • Wall climb (chain link)
  • 500 yard run
  • 1.5 mile run (minimum time - 15:20 minutes)

Oral Board Interview

Psychological Examination

Medical Examination and Drug Screen Post-Offer

Peace Officer Certification

Arizona Lateral Officers

Those officers that are currently certified in Arizona need only to complete the field training program before receiving their patrol assignment.

Out-of-State Lateral Officers

Those officers that are currently certified in another state may apply to take the Arizona P.O.S.T. waiver exam. Officers receive their Arizona Peace Officer certification upon successful completion of this exam, which enables them to forego the law enforcement training academy.

Entry Level Officers

New hires that are not currently certified peace officers are required to attend a law enforcement training academy to obtain their Arizona Peace Officer certification.

Law Enforcement Training Academy

  • The Department's primary training academy is WALETA (Western Arizona Law Enforcement Training Academy)
  • This is an 18-week academy, Monday through Friday.
  • Information will be provided to the officer prior to enrollment in regard to curriculum, attire, and expectations.

Officer Assignments

After completing the 16 week field training program, newly hired officers are assigned to Patrol, but may also be eligible for the following special assignments in addition to patrol duties: S.W.A.T. Team, Hostage Negotiator, Bomb Technician, Haz-Mat Technician, Armorer, Polygraph Examiner, Clandestine Lab Technician, D.A.R.E. Instructor, and Accident Reconstructionist.
