Mayor Mark S. Nexsen dedicates and proclaims many days and events for citizens that go above and beyond in Lake Havasu City. But on Saturday, July 14, for the first time during his tenure, an event was named in his honor and will forever be known as the “Annual Mark S. Nexsen Veterans Treatment Court Family Day.”

The annual event provides an opportunity for veterans going through the treatment court to celebrate program success with their families and supporters. Approximately 300 people attended, and 19 local and state agencies were present to assist the veterans and their families with information on services and resources available to them in the area.

Judge Mitchell Kalauli dedicated the annual family day to Mayor Nexsen because of his unwavering support for all veterans and the program over the years. “None of this would have been possible without the vision that Mayor Nexsen had six years ago,” said Judge Kalauli. 

Mayor Nexsen’s support does not start and end with Veterans Treatment Court, however. He has been an avid advocate and supporter of veterans and veteran groups in our community for many years. He is a proud honorary member of the Marine Corps League Detachment #757 and recently achieved the honor of being a lifetime member of the Vietnam Veterans of America. He has presented hundreds of proclamations and military certificates in appreciation of active and retired service men and women; delivered heartfelt speeches at 9/11, Veterans Day, and Vietnam Veterans Day ceremonies; and, through his leadership as mayor, the City became a Vietnam War Commemorative Partner.

Although, it was Mayor Nexsen’s vision that spearheaded the creation of a Veterans Court in our area, Mayor Nexsen gives all the credit of success to the many volunteers, the Veterans Resource Team, and Veterans Treatment Court staff, “The Veterans Court has been successful due to the efforts of Judge Mitchell Kalauli, Court Supervisor Jennifer Harrold, Veterans Treatment Court Coordinator Colene Lowery and the many volunteers. We have mentors that guide and advise veterans participating in the Veterans Treatment Court program, making a difference every day. We also have the Veterans Resource Team that makes sure the needs of our veterans are met. These are just two examples of the types of volunteers that are instrumental in the ongoing success of this valuable program and its mission to ‘Leave No Veteran Behind!”
