In 1979, just one year after Lake Havasu City’s incorporation, Mr. Ed Frederico brought the first community holiday tree to Wheeler Park, inspiring a tradition rooted in hope, generosity, and togetherness. With the help of his friend Mr. Jim Carr and the community’s unwavering support, the tree was transported from Phoenix and planted in Wheeler Park, becoming the centerpiece of Lake Havasu City’s first holiday celebration.

 

For more than four decades, the tree has stood tall as a living landmark in the heart of the park, providing shade, beauty, and cherished memories for generations of Havasu families. Each holiday season, its twinkling lights reflected the spirit of giving that defined both Ed Frederico’s dream and the heart of Lake Havasu City itself.

 

Now, as the original tree reaches the end of its natural life, this ceremony provides an opportunity to pause, reflect, and celebrate its legacy. City leaders, community partners, and residents are invited to gather in gratitude for the joy this tree has brought to our city and say their goodbyes.

 

In the same pioneering spirit that inspired Lake Havasu City’s founders, the Havasu Pioneers will donate and plant a new tree in Wheeler Park to replace it. This living tribute will continue to reflect the warmth, unity, and community pride that the tree brought to Lake Havasu City for more than 40 years.

 

Following the Farewell Tree Ceremony, Lake Havasu City will continue the tradition with the annual Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony on Sunday, November 30, 2025, at Wheeler Park, marking the first lighting of the new tree and one final season of the traditional ceremony in the park where it all began.

 

Beginning in 2026, the annual Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony moves to Main Street Commons, symbolizing a new chapter in this beloved holiday tradition. However, the new tree at Wheeler Park will continue to be decorated and lit each holiday season, ensuring that the heart of the original tree, and the magic it represents, remains shining in its rightful home.

 

As we say farewell to this treasured tree, we remember that while its branches may rest, the magic it sparked will continue to grow, lighting hearts, inspiring kindness, and bringing people together for generations to come.
