Alkali Sacaton Grass
ALKALI SACATON GRASS
Sporobolus airoides

This warm season bunch grass forms attractive mounds of slim gray-green arching leaves, and is tolerant of both prairie-like and dry desert settings. Alkali Sacaton produces one or more culms in late spring that rise above the foliage and bear feathery panicles of pink spikelets. This grass' common name refers to its preference for alkaline soil, and "sacaton" is an Aztec word meaning "grass."
