Mormon Tea
MORMON TEA
Ephedra viridis

Mormon Tea derives its common name from the beverage that was brewed using the plant's branches by the early Mormon pioneers that were settling the West in the 1800’s. Native Americans and Mexicans historically used the tea for bronchial dilation. Ephedra contains caffeine and small amounts of the drug ephedrine, which has been used in decongestants for colds and as a stimulant. Ephedra was also used for the treatment of urinary tract infections, as a diuretic, and to treat syphilis.
