Swamp Mallee
SWAMP MALLEE
Eucalyptus spathulata

Also known as Narrow-Leaf Gimlet, Swamp Mallee is potentially one of the best small eucalyptus for desert residential landscapes as it is highly tolerable of poor soils and harsher conditions. A tough and rugged species, it tolerates cold, heat, wind, smog, aridity, saline and alkaline soils, and sea coast exposure, and is extremely drought tolerant although occasional summer irrigation is beneficial in hot areas.

Be sure to screen nursery stock for upright forms with a straight and sturdy trunk and smaller adult leaves. Otherwise, be sure to train young trees rigorously to establish a strong and well balanced scaffold branch system. If not trained, this small tree will show 'malle' (shrub) characteristics. Narrow-leaf gimlet is susceptible to bacterial wet wood that is typically spread through use of non-sterilized pruning equipment.
