MOHAVE COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING INVESTIGATION
April 19, 2021

The Lake Havasu City Police Department is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred on April 17, 2021, in Kingman, AZ.

At approximately 9:00 p.m., deputies from the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle for a moving traffic violation. The driver of the vehicle failed to stop and led deputies on a low-speed pursuit onto North Stockton Hill Road. The driver began operating the vehicle in an erratic manner into on-coming traffic, and the deputies terminated the pursuit.

After a short time, the vehicle was observed traveling back toward the deputies on North Stockton Hill Road when it approached one of the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Vehicles and rammed the patrol vehicle before leaving the area. Deputies re-engaged in a low-speed pursuit with the vehicle and terminated the pursuit after the driver continued to operate the vehicle in an erratic manner.

Deputies continued to search for the vehicle and observed it near McVicar Avenue, where the driver attempted to ram another Mohave County Sheriff’s Office vehicle. Deputies engaged in another low-speed pursuit and followed the vehicle as it pulled into a residential driveway in the 1100 block of McVicar Avenue. A deputy attempted to make contact with the driver, at which time a confrontation ensued and the deputy fired several shots from his duty weapon striking the driver.

The driver was transported to the Kingman Regional Medical Center and succumbed to his injuries after lifesaving efforts failed.

The investigation is ongoing. The name of the Deputy involved and the driver of the vehicle are not being released at this time. It is protocol to have an outside agency investigate an officer-involved shooting incident.
