Detectives with the Lake Havasu City Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Unit are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred on January 27, 2023, in Bullhead City, AZ.

On January 27, 2023, during the evening hours, officers with the Bullhead City Police Department were dispatched to the 1600 Blk. of Silver Creek Rd. in Bullhead City, AZ. in reference to a report of a subject wearing a bullet-proof vest that was pointing a pistol at bystanders in the area. When officers arrived, they found that the suspect had barricaded himself in his trailer on the property. The Bullhead City Police Department’s SWAT team, along with the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office Tactical Operations Unit, responded to assist with this incident. The suspect ultimately shot at SWAT officers from within his trailer. During this incident, it was found that an innocent bystander (who occupied a separate trailer) was struck by one of the suspect’s bullets. This bystander was transported to the Sunrise Medical center in Las Vegas, NV. for treatment. It is believed that the bystander sustained non-life-threatening injuries at this point.

During the armed confrontation, three SWAT officers from the Bullhead City Police Department fired their weapons and struck the suspect, who was later identified as 41-year-old Bullhead City Resident Kyle Schafer. Kyle sustained injuries as a result of the shooting. Kyle continued to fire his weapon at SWAT officers, however, he eventually surrendered. He was taken into custody and transferred to the Sunrise Medical Center. It is believed that Kyle sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

No officers were injured during this incident. The investigation is ongoing, and the names of the officers involved in the incident are not being released at this time. It is standard protocol to have an outside agency investigate an officer-involved shooting incident.
